We spent the day with AL & CJ at
the NY Botanical Garden to visit the Japanese Kiku exhibit. It was a beautiful fall day and we really
enjoyed the garden. This was the first
time for all of us and we were all surprised that we waited so long to
visit this beautiful oasis.
From the NY Botanical Garden website:
The chrysanthemum, kiku in
Japanese, is the most celebrated of all Japanese fall-flowering plants, and
hundreds of meticulously trained kiku will be on display in the Enid
A. Haupt Conservatory. Special weekend events spotlight the arts of bonsai and
ikebana, as well as taiko drumming, and celebrate the importance of
flowers in Japanese culture.
We also watched the live Taiko
Drumming show they had on one of the lawns.
The group that performed was Taiko Masala from Brooklyn, NY. It was a lovely performance and we enjoyed
the live show a lot.
From the NY Botanical Garden website:
Taiko Masala has thrilled audiences
throughout the U.S. with performances of Japan’s traditional drumming—taiko—combining
the training and discipline of Japanese martial arts with the precision and
power of complex drumming. Taiko Masala brings stunning visuals and breathless
excitement to their performances. Their arsenal of instruments, all hand made
by the ensemble, range from small eight-inch, hand-held drums to five foot
barrel drums, and features the giant 250-pound O-daiko.
