The kids had their own day planned so we ventured out on our own. They had a luau planned at the Marriott while we intended to do a night snorkel with the manta rays.
This morning, we headed to back to Kailua-Kona and enjoyed breakfast at Buns in the Suns, another eatery to cross off my list. I had their veggie quiche and hubby had their banana bread - both solid ways to start. This breakfast joint is in an outdoor mall so there are plenty of places to eat and shop. Therefore, we headed to Hilo Hattie to do a bit of souvenir shopping for the family before heading out to the beach.
Our second stop took us to Kekaha Kai State Park where all the reviews said it was like being on a private beach. This was indeed the case, though I believe it is the miles of rocky, unpaved road you have to drive to in order to end up at a rocky, beach with gravelly sand that is the reason it is secluded.... we didn't stay beyond 20 minutes - just enough time to take photos and plan our next stop.
This was the 'good' part of the unpaved road |
Stop Three - Kua Bay
This was a pretty beach and it had decent number of folks on the beach without being crowded. While we were hanging out on the beach, we ran into our only two friends on the island - Andrew & Cindy! :)
L&L Drive INN - we worked up an appetite and were ready for some eats. No trip to Hawaii would be complete without stopping by their version of McDonald's.
Stop Five
We had a bit of time before we needed to check in for our Manta Ray night tour so we drove to a beach at mile marker 3 and did what other folks did during their downtime....spelled out their names using white rocks.
Stop Six
Checked into Sea Paradise for our tour at the Keauhou Shopping Center and then headed down to the harbor to catch out boat. Got this lovely photo of the sun setting. There were 14 others on the tour and it was awesome!
Stop Seven - Final Stop Kenichi Pacific with Tony San, our personal sushi chef (we were the only ones at the sushi bar) and he took very good care of us, along with our waitress, Makala.
