Big Island - Day Two

Well rested and re-energized, we decided to do a little exploring before heading to the resort pool.  Not one to waste a beautiful day, we got an early jump on the morning heading directly to the activities desk where we got our questions answered regarding luaus, car rentals (for Andrew), manta ray night snorkels and a lunch recommendation before heading off to Kialua-Kona.

We made a stop over to K-Mart where the kids got snorkel gear and a floaty, as well as some souvenirs.  As with all trips, I looked for a special magnet that would signify the trip for us and came across a perfect keepsake - a magnet of a Hawaiian license plate!

Several weeks prior to our trip, we went to visit our friends Jimmy & Sandy who have two precious daughters, Marin & Luna.  During our visit, Sandy shared a game she played with her daughters in the car to make drives more interesting for them.  They maintained a running list of out of state license plates with the goal of trying to spot a new one with each drive.  It was a game that Kyung  & I since adopted and prior to our visit to Hawaii, we were at 31 states.  On the way to the airport, we spotted Illinois and in Hawaii, we spotted Oregon and of course, the most treasured - Hawaii!  Well, I guess if I saw Alaska, that would have been even better, but the closest we've come to that so far was a man standing in front of us at the security check in with an Alaskan diver's license.

Anyway, we were very happy with our purchases and then headed out to get some lunch at Ultimate Burger nearby.  I had the Ahi Burger which was the best Ahi Burger I've ever tasted while Hubby had the cheeseburger, along with some garlic fries.

Satisfied with our meals, we headed to Kailua-Kona and walked around this lovely little town.  Stopped by Kope Lani Heavenly Coffee & Ice Cream for some iced coffee, walked along the sea wall to enjoy the views, got some great advice from Jason at Big Island Adventures Tour group on local beaches and took some silly pictures in front of Scandinavian Shave Ice.  Feeling thoroughly warmed up and ready to swim, we headed to Waialea Beach (locals call it Beach 69 which represent its mile marker off route 19).

Jason recommended this beach as one of the very few that has an abundance of shade, something locals treasure which is probably why there were quite a few arriving with big coolers at the same time we were leaving.  This time of year, the water was a big choppy, but nevertheless refreshing and we enjoyed our first ocean swim.
After the beach, we decided to head over to the Hilton Waikola Pool and enjoy the slide.  The pool was massive and the slide was lots of fun!

For dinner, we headed to Queens Village where Hubby and I feasted on Ippy's Hawaiian BBQ. He was one of the finalist on season 8 of "The Next Food Network Star" and I was curious to try his food.  Though we didn't watch the entire season, the few snippets we did watch of him were unimpressive, but being the devout reality television groupie that I am, I could not resist.

I had the pork loco moco which was wayyy too salty though the mac salad was the best I during my entire stay.  Kyung's garlic shrimp was delicious and highly recommended.
